170 giant tortoises released on Galapagos Island

At least 170 captive-bred giant tortoises were released onto a Galapagos island in Ecuador last month, according to the Galapagos National Park.

More than 170 young turtles of a subspecies of the Galapagos turtle, which can only be found on the island of Isabela, have been exposed in freedom. For two years the young have been patched up in a breeding station – now the wide world is waiting for them.

The Directorate of the Galapagos National Park (DPNG), with the support of Galapagos Conservancy, repatriated 170 giant juvenile turtles of the species Chelonoidis vicina to its natural habitat in Cinco Cerros, south of Isabela Island.
