- Over 200 oil and gas companies collectively owe over $250 million in unpaid property taxes, forcing municipalities to cut services to manage the shortfall, according to the Rural Municipalities of Alberta .
- Approximately $100 million of the unpaid taxes is owed by companies still operating, and at least $150 million is owed by bankrupt companies, making recovery of these taxes nearly impossible, according to RMA President Kara Westerlund.
- Seven municipalities are owed more than $10 million in unpaid taxes, while municipalities in Northeastern Alberta are the most affected, owing over $102 million in back taxes, which is critical for local services and infrastructure, according to RMA's survey.
- The RMA is advocating for a Property Tax Accountability Strategy and changes to regulations to ensure companies resolve their tax issues and provide municipalities with more tools to enforce payment, as highlighted by Westerlund.
