Armenian government approves plan to join European Union

Armenia's government at Thursday's meeting approved a bill on the country's accession to the European Union. According to the document, which is yet to be adopted by parliament, Armenia thereby announces the start of the process of gaining EU membership. The Kremlin responded by warning that it could not be simultaneously in the EU and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAHU), which offers Armenia numerous advantages, Russian media reported.

For a long time, Russia was something like Armenia's protector. However, the relationship has now deteriorated significantly. Moscow is unlikely to be pleased that the country is now taking a step towards possible EU accession. Ultimately, however, the decision should be up to the people.

Lange Zeit ist Russland so etwas wie die Schutzmacht Armeniens. Das Verhältnis ist mittlerweile jedoch deutlich schlechter geworden. Dass das Land nun einen Schritt hin zu einem möglichen EU-Beitritt geht, dürfte Moskau nicht erfreuen. Die Entscheidung soll letztlich aber beim Volk liegen.
