Deadly diphtheria infection reported at IPAS centre

A 19-year-old resident from East Africa tested positive for the disease in only the third recorded case of the infection in Ireland since 1967

The Chief Sanitary Inspector has revealed the latest information on diphtheria cases in Poland. Currently, two patients with this infectious disease are being treated in a hospital in Wrocław. The diphtheria outbreak may soon be considered to be over, but, as Dr. Grzesiowski said, one condition must be met for this to happen.

Between 1 January 2024 and 16 March 2025, 33 confirmed cases of respiratory diphtheria, 1 probable respiratory diphtheria case and 38 asymptomatic carriers of toxigenic C. diphtheriae, detected during contact tracing, have been identified in South Africa.
