The Commission is still hoping to negotiate with Washington to limit the damage caused by the announced surcharges. The first round of retaliation, which was due to take place on 1 April, is postponed for one part in mid-April and for the other part in mid-May.

The EU has prepared the so-called trade bazooka, which after the US announced its tariffs now risks being fired. “We are in a trade war,” says Per Altenberg, trade policy analyst at the Swedish College of Commerce.
