First new road crossing east of Tower Bridge since 1991 opens on Monday
- Londoners will have a new way to cross the river with the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel on Monday, the first new road crossing opened in the capital in more than 50 years.
- The Silvertown Tunnel is the first new road crossing east of London’s Tower Bridge since the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge was opened in October 1991.
- TfL stated that charges will help manage traffic levels, repay construction costs, and cover maintenance and operation fees.
- Boris Johnson first proposed the tunnel in 2009, but it was not approved until 2018, as it aims to reduce congestion around the Blackwall Tunnel.
