Despite this, the German leadership has so far refrained from taking meaningful fiscal steps to stimulate the economy. However, the events of the past weeks and months may rewrite the picture and the German economy may take a new direction after the German elections.

German political parties are wrapping up their campaigns ahead of Sunday's snap parliamentary elections. The economy, which is in recession for the second year, is among the main topics. Its performance is likely to decline again this year, due to persistently high energy prices, bureaucracy and, more recently, strained trade relations with the United States.

The Cluster 17 Institute has carried out several studies on Germany with a view to better understanding the main key issues and how the electorate was structured by clusters of values on the eve of the federal elections on 23 February. A "voting day" study was conducted during the Europeans last June as well as a final "voting intentions" poll between 16 and 18 February 2025. The results of these two studies are presented in this article.
