Year’s first cases of blue-green algae confirmed in Lough Neagh
- Blue-Green algae has been confirmed in Lough Neagh, according to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency on April 10 and 11.
- Lough Neagh, which supplies 40% of Northern Ireland's drinking water, faces blooms worsened by agricultural runoff and climate change.
- Environment Minister Andrew Muir stated that he expects algae to return this year but emphasized that addressing this problem will take time.
- The NIEA encourages the public to report suspected algae blooms through the Bloomin' Algae App or by emailing emergency-pollution@daera-ni.gov.uk.
