Nestlé SA may have to stop marketing its French beverage brand Perrier as a mineral water after admitting to using filtering methods illegal for natural mineral waters.

In a 150-page report, a group of hydrogeologists issued an "unfavorable opinion" to Nestlé Waters for the exploitation of wells as a natural mineral water at its Vergèze site in the Gard.

Hydrogeologists requested by the Gard prefecture in the context of the renewal of the exploitation authorization for the production of Perrier under the name "natural mineral water" by Nestlé Waters gave an opinion "disadvantaged", it was learned on Wednesday during the hearing of the director general of Nestlé Laurent Freixe in the Senate.
