For theologian Consuelo Vélez, the focus of the story of the adulterous woman is not adultery, but rather Jesus' ability to disarm condemnation—a legalistic trap of the Pharisees and scribes—with mercy. "In the patriarchal societies of Jesus' time and even in our own, these sins are considered grave in women and are not even questioned in men," she writes for the series Al romper el pan (Breaking Bread) about Sunday's Gospel.
