No review of plan for alcohol-label warnings, Department of Health insists

The Department of Health says there is no review of the plan to attach warning labels to alcohol from next year, even though Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has said the issue would have to be looked at again, in the context of the US tariffs.

The Irish legislation adopted in 2023 and published under the reference S.I. No. 249/2023, imposing mandatory health information on alcoholic beverages labels, is a first in Europe and a heated debate. On the basis of recent scientific evidence, Ireland has chosen to introduce a deterrent labelling including textual warnings, pictograms, an indication in grams of pure alcohol and a link to an official prevention site.
