The consortium of producers of Italy's Parmesan (Parmigiano Reggiano) cheese said Thursday that US President Donald Trump's 20% tariffs on EU goods were "absurd". (ANSA)

Export to the US is worth 22.5%, the president of the Consortium: “Our forms cost twice as much as Parmesan, so Americans are not protected. Even in Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Vermont, there are traditional cheeses made only there.”

Producers of Italy's famed Parmigiano Reggiano said on Thursday that punishing US tariffs imposed on their product made "no sense", noting that it wasn't in competition with American hard cheeses.

The United States is the first foreign market for the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium and represents 22.5% of exports

The president of the Italian Parmesan cheese producers' association also said that customs duties went from 15% to 35%.
