German Public-Sector Workers Win 5.8% Staggered Wage Increase

German public-sector workers secured a 5.8% wage increase, to be awarded in two tranches, after arbitrators intervened when three rounds of negotiations with employers failed to produce a result.

After months of negotiations, the collective bargaining parties in the public service of the federal and local authorities agreed on a conclusion. Among other things, the more than 2.5 million employees receive more money in two stages, as both sides reported in Potsdam.

Collective bargaining in the public sector has been resolved, trade unions and employers have agreed. Employees in the federal and local authorities are expected to receive a total of 5.8 percent more pay in two stages.
