EXCLUSIVE: Fram2 commander shares insight into first polar orbit
- The Fram2 mission, a private and citizen endeavor led by 42-year-old Chun Wang, is scheduled to launch on March 31, 2025, at 11:20 p.m. ET from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, carrying four novice space explorers in SpaceX’s Dragon capsule named Resilience.
- Wang's lifelong interest in space and conversations with SpaceX, combined with a desire to view Svalbard from space after spending considerable time there, motivated the Fram2 mission, named after the historic Fram ship that first reached Earth’s polar regions.
- The Fram2 mission will achieve a 90-degree circularized polar orbit, a first for human spaceflight, at an altitude of 265 to 280 miles, allowing the crew, including vehicle commander Jannicke Mikkelsen, mission pilot Rabea Rogge , and mission specialist/medical officer Eric Philips, to observe Earth's polar regions from a unique vantage point previously only seen by Apollo lunar missions.
- Wang described the mission as a culmination of adventures, stating, "This mission is the culmination of all the many adventures and frontiers I’ve had the chance to visit here on Earth," and expressing excitement about sharing their love for the polar regions and demonstrating that "space is ultimately going to be for all people and nations."
- The three-to-five-day Fram2 mission aims to support the SolarMaX and Blue Marble Projects, capture aurora photos, engage children with space, and conduct research including growing oyster mushrooms in microgravity for future lunar and Martian missions, while also acknowledging and preparing for the increased radiation exposure and risks associated with polar orbits.
