On the day of Pope Francis’ funeral, Saturday at 9:00 AM, Hungary’s national flag was raised and then lowered to half-mast in a formal ceremony with military honours in front of the Parliament Building, in Kossuth Square, Budapest. The government declared the day a national day of mourning as an expression of national sympathy and respect. Romania raises its flags to the brim as a sign of respect for Pope Francis. The government officially decreed April 26, 2025 as a day of national mourning, in memory of the former Sovereign Pontiff. All public institutions and citizens flying the flag of Romania are obliged to lower it to the brim, and the press and cultural institutions must adapt the program in accordance with the solemnity of the moment.
