The great eruption of Kilauea caused a phytoplankton explosion in the Pacific

Summary
When the Kilauea volcano erupted in May 2018, an enormous amount of ash was released into the atmosphere through a column of almost eight kilometers high. A new study, carried out by an international team of researchers, has revealed that an unusual and extensive flowering of summer phytoplankton in the North Pacific during the summer of 2018 was caused by ash that fell on the surface of the ocean approximately 1,930 kilometers west of the volcano. The research has been published in the journal 'Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans'.
