DR Congo and Rwanda vow to agree peace plan by 2 May

The two neighbouring nations sign a US-brokered deal aimed at stopping the fighting in eastern DR Congo.

Both countries recognize "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the other and are embarking on a path to settle their differences by peaceful means".

Engaged in an armed conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for some 30 years, both countries expressed their readiness to respect their respective sovereignty in a joint declaration signed in Washington on Friday, 25 April.

Rwanda and DR Congo set May 2 deadline for peace deal

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have agreed to work toward a draft peace agreement by May 2 following months of escalating violence in eastern DRC. In a diplomatic breakthrough, the two nations signed a declaration Friday in Washington pledging mutual respect for sovereignty and halting military support for armed groups.

Both countries committed themselves to respecting their respective sovereignty, according to a declaration signed by both countries, alongside the US Secretary of State.
