Macron on Le Pen's conviction: 'Everyone has the right to appeal'

The Head of State wished to remind the Council of Ministers that justice is "independent" and that "all litigants have the right to appeal".

A court imposes a policy ban on Marine Le Pen. In Germany, such judgments are unusual, but possible – and Union and SPD are now planning tougher rules. Could there also be a "Le Pen case" here?

"The judiciary is independent," the French president said of the decision against Marine Le Pen, who "has the right to appeal."

On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and his Prime Minister François Bayrou gave strong support to the independence of the judiciary following the conviction in first instance of the leader of the French extreme right-wing Marine Le Pen, after the announcement that the decision on appeal could take place in the summer of 2026.
