Shoplifting surge sees police record more than 500,000 cases in a year for first time
- More than 500,000 shoplifting offences were recorded by police in England and Wales in 2024, the highest figure since current recording practices began over 20 years ago.
- The British Retail Consortium says shoplifting costs the retail sector millions each year, putting strain on businesses already grappling with post-pandemic recovery and economic uncertainty.
- Police also recorded 152,416 theft from the person offences in 2024, a 22% rise, with mobile phones being the most commonly stolen item in this category.
