Shore of Lake Valkenburg sunk due to weak sand layer
After more than two weeks, the Rheinland Water Council knows what caused part of the shore of Lake Valkenburg near Leiden to collapse. On 1 April, some 20 meters from the shore disappeared into the water on the south side of the lake, over a length of about 200 meters. According to research institute Deltares, the quay collapsed due to sedimentation: a weak layer of sand that flows away like quicksand.
