Thousands of strange sea creatures are blanketing Bay Area beaches

Jellyfish-like creatures wash up on Bolinas Beach in Marin County

Another sign of spring was seen along the coast in the North Bay on Monday. The Bolinas Beach in Marin County was covered with a massive swarm of Velella. The jellyfish-like species are common in Northern California in spring and summer. The weekend rains and winds washed them ashore. The storm on Mallorca last weekend has swept numerous sailing jellyfish to the beaches. For people, the contact is usually harmless and can lead at most to slight skin irritations. Over time, however, the decaying jellyfish exude a violent stench.

During the weekend, millions of blue jellyfish were washed to a beach in Port de Sóller. Like a carpet, they cover the sand in the north of Mallorca.
