The liberation of Brno was preceded by heavy fighting mainly to the south of the city

Saturday marks eighty years since the liberation of Brno from the Nazis. They had engaged in fierce fighting with the advancing Red Army in the vicinity of the city a few days before. The fighting for Brno claimed many lives. Twelve hundred locals, twelve thousand Red Army soldiers and seven thousand German soldiers were killed.
