- Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued IDs, following a 9/11 Commission recommendation.
- States offer Real IDs and Enhanced IDs; the latter allows land and sea border crossings from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.
- Robert Sinclair Jr. Of AAA Northeast stated, "If you want to fly without the passport, then you have to have that Real ID domestically."
- Travelers can obtain a Real ID at the DMV with required documents, or they can use a valid U.S. Passport instead.
