Conflict in DRC: African Union names Togolese president Faure Gnassingbé as new mediator

The African Union announced on Sunday that it had named Faure Gnassingbé, president of Togo, as new mediator in the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC. Gnassingbé will take over from his Angolan counterpart Joao Lourenço, who stepped down from the role last month.

He succeeds Angolan President Joao Lourenço, who gave up this role after several unsuccessful diplomatic attempts to put an end to hostilities in the east of the country.

In an attempt to revive peace efforts in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the African Union has designated Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of Togo, as the new official mediator of the conflict between Kinshasa and armed groups supported, according to several sources, by Rwanda.
