- The incident occurred while he assisted a driver whose pickup truck was stuck in a ditch.
- A 64-year-old man driving a Cadillac CTS went off Stratton Road and struck both men.
- Lieutenant Mickolick, 43 years old, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
- The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was transported by helicopter for medical care.
