Sudden return of winter in the Tatras! TOPR warns

Spring has not yet fully arrived in the Tatras, and the weather is once again reminding us of winter realities. Heavy snowfall and strong winds have made conditions in the mountains very dangerous. Rescuers are warning - the situation is serious.

29 degrees Celsius - this was the perceived temperature on Śnieżka on Sunday, April 6. GOPR reported on the conditions in the Karkonosze Mountains after the sudden cooling.

On Sunday morning in Zakopane there was already 25 cm of snow and it was still raining heavily. The temperature in the city dropped to minus 7° C. On Kasprowy Wierch, the snow cover reached 80 cm, and on the peaks of the Tatra Mountains thermometers showed minus 15° C. The return of winter this spring - for several hours in the Tatras it has been snowing intensively. In Zakopane, 10 cm of white fluff arrived, and on the peaks even 80 cm. TOPR issued second and third degree avalanche warnings and urged extreme caution when hiking.

TOPR rescuers announced an increase in the avalanche threat to the third degree on Sunday morning. "Trójka" applies above 1,700 m above sea level. Winter suddenly returned to the Tatras at night. There is already almost 80 cm of snow on Kasprowy Wierch, and the temperature at the top has dropped to -14 degrees Celsius.
