Germany wants to allow Syrian refugees to visit home

In January, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees resumed its funding for trips to Syria. To date, 464 people have used the subsidies, while families receive up to 4000 euros.

Since the change of power in Syria last December, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has supported almost 500 people to return home. A family can receive up to 4,000 euros of start-up aid.

Germany wants to allow Syrian refugees to visit home

Refugees would be allowed to travel home if the visit can prepare them for a later permanent return, as per an Interior Ministry proposal. Currently, a visit to one's home country can have their refugee status revoked.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has presented the countries with a concept to enable Syrian refugees to travel home.

The Federal Government wants to allow Syrians to visit their homes on a temporary basis without losing their protection status – in preparation for a return. The CSU strongly criticizes the project and warns against "holiday trips under cover".
